Double Happiness
I found the DE subject rather controversial because I believe no one can be taught to be entrepreneur, you are either born by it or not. I have heard from a lot of people that entrepreneurship as a quality can be learnt but somehow I don’t believe it. What can be taught is what entrepreneurs do but you can’t teach someone how to be one. It should come from within.
The exercise we were given, Double Happiness, I think was a good idea, but the only flaw I see in it that it forced student to be enterprising. But I guess if this was not done, there would be really less taker for this exercise. I always knew that there is a prejudice against entrepreneur students in MBA colleges. But I like those colleges where case method is taught, I believe it helps students get a feel of what is meant by entrepreneurship because in there you had to think and be innovative in your responses and remember that no two cases are same and no two cases can be solved in same way.
When this exercise was announced in the class I knew that this is a good opportunity to show off my natural talent, entrepreneurship to the class. I took it on myself that I will not leave any opportunity which comes my way and on the very next day I was contacted by one of my old partners in India, who is a travel agent, that one of his guests is coming to Manila for a business conference and he wanted me to book a room for his guest. The guest being a well to do gentleman wanted to stay at Shangri-La hotel at executive club floor. The normal charges for that room is Php 12,300/- plus taxes. I knew that if I go and speak to them, I can get it at a good discount so I went to the hotel and spoke with the manager. I negotiated with him and finally booked the room at Php 8060/- plus taxes. But the guest really didn’t care and since he was ready to spend Php 12,300/-, I didn’t inform him of the discount I got. I kept this money for myself and my partner.
Total net profit in this deal was Php 13,000/- out of which I got Php 9,000/- and rest was my partner’s share.
So all I can say is, Php 9,000/- for 1 hour of negotiation, my MBA has started to pay off. :-)

What will I do if I were an Entrepreneur?
As one of my entrepreneur ventures, I want to set up a consultancy firm. My main focus will be environmental consultancy such as carbon trading, green purchasing and other operations consultancies increasing the efficiencies of plants and processes to mak them eco-friendly. Since Kyoto Protocol, a number of consultants started catering to this field of consultancy but the market is still big. USA has not signed and from the signs it does not seem they will either. USA market for purchasing Carbon Credit is assumed to be bigger than European market. At present, most of the companies are actively participating in such efforts and are investing heavily on similar measures.
India and China are currently the biggest seller of carbon trading although as per industry experts, they have not even utilised 5% of their capacity. Thus setting up a environmental consultancy in India will be a profitable business.
